Do you know how narcissistic abuse can impact personal hygiene in such strange ways? It may not make sense, but the thing is that emotional stress from the experience of working with a narcissist can manage to seep into every area of your existence, including self-care. It happens mostly due to stress, low self-worth, and feeling overwhelmed. In this topic, I’m going to tell you a little about the strange and surprising ways in which narcissistic abuse can affect your cleanliness.
Number 1: Avoiding showering for days
You catch yourself showering every other day after having been through the abuse of a narcissist, and it has absolutely nothing to do with you being in water-saving minimalist survival mode. You’re apparently in survival mode in your head, and basic self-care is no more. Clinical psychologist Dr. Ramani Durvasula says that narcissistic abuse makes you feel so emotionally exhausted that even showering is an effort. And come on, when you’re tired, cleanliness is just not on the agenda. It’s not that you need to smell like a sock; you’re just too tired to care about it.
