How? With surgical filters, unusual diets, and fads. They do not care how artificial they appear. It doesn’t matter if they’re not youthful, only that others continue to look, that others continue to watch. And if they cannot be youthful, they will attempt to surround themselves with it. How? They will date younger, dress younger, speak younger, and laugh louder than the rest in the room. They will risk being foolish just so that others won’t know they’re old.
But this is the mean part nobody ever mentions: certain narcissists will also sabotage the young people that are around them, particularly those who make them think about what they once were a mother sabotaging her teenage looks, a boss sabotaging a young new employee who’s a genius, an influencer who will sabotage an emerging content creator behind the scenes. They don’t merely want to appear young. They want to be the only owner of that energy.
Anybody who owns youth is automatically a threat, and threats need to be dealt with in silence, strategy, and never getting their own hands dirty. They will risk losing their child’s trust. They will risk losing their reputation. They will risk losing the kind of aging that is graceful, real, and human all so they do not to seem to be someone whose time is past.
It’s not about staying young. It’s about staying relevant. And when that fantasy begins to collapse, they spiral out of control. They’ll spin. They’ll begin reaching out for individuals, things, and promises that offer them even a glimmer of what they once had. It’s never adequate, but they’ll try it.
