They want control over the story that gets remembered, and nothing ruins that like visual evidence of your authentic joy. So they wipe it clean or, worse, they replace it with frozen, staged smiles where you looked disconnected but were clinging to them because you were terrified photos that reinforce their version of the events. Basically, this is emotional erasure; they were rewriting your past without ever touching your diary.
Number 2: They use your photos to trauma-bond you, but from a distance
Even when they’ve gone silent or ghosted you, they know exactly how to haunt you without a word. They’ll post, or send, or have someone send that one selfie of you two where you were trauma-bonded but exhausted, clinging to each other like you were the last people on Earth. They’ll frame it as nostalgia and say something really cryptic with it, which only you’ll be able to pinpoint and understand that pet name they had given you or what you used to call each other as a couple. But why? Well, to reopen the wound they created and make you feel helpless again.
That image is a weapon now; they know it is a psychological anchor. It shows up in your feed when you’ve been trying to move on. It hits your nervous system before your eyes even register it, and just like that, you’re back in the fog. Your body starts remembering what your brain is trying to forget. You’re shaking, crying, surprised by all the grief you feel, and in no time, you find yourself back in their messages, trying to justify yourself. None of this is sentimental, you need to remember this. It’s emotional sabotage dressed as longing. They know exactly how to pull your soul back through a screen.
