Reason 1: Unpredictability of introverts
Narcissists require predictability. They base their manipulative tactics on the way you normally react. They have to read you. When you’re sobbing, screaming, rationalizing, or pleading, they mentally mark it down. They know what button to push the next time.
But those moments when you are quiet, forget that script. You don’t respond the same. You break off from explaining, justifying, giving them these surefire emotional payoffs, and that completely derails them. They start to spin out in bewilderment:
“Are they still under his control?”
“Is he or she pulling back?”
“Has he or she caught on?”
“Are they conspiring against me?”
“What are they doing?”
“What are they up to?”
Their head begins freaking since they can no longer read you. They cannot find out what’s happening, and when they can no longer read you, they cannot control you. Spontaneity, as I said before, daunts them. It is like being in the middle of a battlefield, blindfolded in one eye. They are losing their strategic edge.
Your silence creates an avenue for doubt they can’t stand. That is why they struggle harder to get a response, and when they are unable to, it bothers them to the core.
