What is frightening about a narcissist is how they hurt you deepest without touching you. They hurt you without screaming, without destroying things, without leaving so much as one visible wound, and that is the very thing which holds you in chains. How? Well, you doubt everything. You doubt whether you are inventing it. You wonder whether it is that terrible. You begin thinking that you’re the issue since they’re not slapping or screaming, but what they do is worse. They suppress your spirit silently. They abandon you when you’re down, and then welcome the neighbor with a smile as if nothing had transpired.
They sit and watch you struggle and never give you anything. They let you break down before them, and then turn around and help a stranger just so you can feel even more alone. That’s the kind of pain that won’t scream out. It does not ask for any attention. It’s the kind that shatters you down in the quietest, unrevealed way. You’re not bruised but broken. You’re not bleeding but dying on the inside. It’s in the eye rolls and the blank stares, in the fact that they just walk away when you need them the most, in the way they make you feel invisible without ever saying a word.
