Number 3. Practice Independence

Narcissists are obsessed with keeping control, making those around them dependent, seeking validation from them. They want others to believe that only they can do what’s right for them. But you can exclude yourself from those who rely on them if you practice independence.

Start doing things your way, taking complete control of your life something not even a narcissist can take from you. Don’t get swayed by the gifts and gestures they offer; you can provide those things for yourself. Stop listening to their claims that you can’t manage without them, and start listening to yourself instead.

Number 4. Wear Their Shoes

Not literally, of course. The best way to catch a fish is to think like one. Imagine yourself in the shoes of a narcissist. What would you feel? What would you do? Answering these questions allows you to counter the portrayal of power by asserting power of your own, becoming someone more effective than the narcissist. This would threaten their sense of supremacy, making them realize that the world does not revolve around them.

By understanding their weak spots, you eventually gain leverage—a card against them, one that keeps them from acting out narcissistic tendencies toward you. This strong offense might lead them to treat you as an equal instead of as someone to fear, aware that you might call their bluff.
