5 Weird Hygiene Habits of a Narcissist

3: Shaving, trimming, and laundry chaos all over the house

Another repulsive habit they practice with shocking regularity is their tendency to leave grooming chaos behind. When living with a male narcissist, it’s routine to walk into the bathroom after they’ve shaved or trimmed their hair and feel like you’ve stepped into a war zone. Tiny hairs are scattered across sinks, floors, mirrors, and even towels; nothing is spared from their grooming aftermath.

It’s almost like they’ve performed delicate surgery, deliberately leaving evidence of their presence behind. Why? Because they see you as a slave. Narcissists do not simply forget to clean; they intentionally leave messes behind, silently communicating that it is beneath their dignity to clean up and that such work is your job.

Moreover, their laundry habits are equally troubling. Dirty socks are thrown carelessly on the sofa, shirts are haphazardly dropped on chairs, and dirty underwear lies blatantly near but never inside the laundry basket. By creating chaotic environments, they assert your role as a subordinate caretaker, responsible for managing their mess.

4: They do hygiene but only for show (selective showering & brushing teeth)

Narcissists weaponize hygiene only for show to get admiration, attention, and to appear “normal.” One particularly bizarre but classic narcissistic trait involves their selective hygiene practices.

Narcissists typically neglect personal cleanliness unless they are scheduled to see someone important or leave the house for a social/professional event, which is abnormal. They may go days without showering, brushing their teeth, or attending to basic hygiene, completely indifferent to their odor or unkempt appearance as long as they remain unseen by outsiders.

However, the moment they expect company or step outside, they frantically scrub, wash, and douse themselves in fragrances to project a pristine image. This superficial hygiene routine highlights an essential truth: For narcissists, personal care is purely performative, driven by appearances rather than genuine self-respect or care for others.

They will remain intentionally dirty and smelly, clearly communicating through their body that your comfort and opinion hold no importance to them.
