7 Everyday Things That Break a Narcissist’s Heart

Number 6: When they silently reject them.

No drama, just distance. He says this one made him visibly angry. “She did not scream. She didn’t even interrupt me. She just stopped answering, stopped caring like I wasn’t there.” He hated that more than any histrionic breakup because drama feeds the narcissist on an emotional level. If you are crying, screaming, or begging, they are still the center of your world.

But silence which I tell you is your power here silence is exile. When the narcissist is left out in the cold with no explanation, blame, or defense, they have nothing to play with. No battle to stir, no story to tell. And worst of all? It makes them wonder why. And that question never ends because it makes them believe that they are a failure and they weren’t strong enough to get a reaction from you.

Number 7: when their pets don’t trust them.

This one caught me off guard. He was describing a cat that wouldn’t approach him and catch her spying on him from everywhere, wide eyes from a distance, never allowing him to pet her at all. “Made me angry,” he said. “Feed her. Tried being friendly, but she just senses it.” This is when it hit me, why narcissists fear being picked up on. Animals, as children, cut through the pretense. They are not swayed by words or pretension. They are swayed by truth. And if the truth is loud and cold and menacing, they flee.

How to Spot a Narcissist in Conversation?

To be rejected by an animal is to be cosmic, God-like, unfiltered. It is not opinion. It is instinct. And to a narcissist, that is terrifying because it verifies something they’ve lived their entire life in denial about: “Maybe I am bad for people, even when I’m smiling.” I just did a tiny reel on that: “Narcissists are not cat people. They’re not beloved by cats.” Now, maybe this isn’t true for every single narcissist. There are narcissists with cats who love them. Well, there simply are too many cats who can smell past the rot of the narcissist. They sniff it; they know it; they feel it, and then they avoid it.

My favorite example is my father, himself-he was hated by all the animals he came in contact with because no one wanted to be around this man. This man was a cancer, a psychopath. And he could never hide. And even if he did, my cat would run very fast just at the sight of him because she was aware that there was no human agency inside. It was a monster coming towards her.
