9 Signs You Are Dealing With a Covert Narcissist

Number 4: They are hypersensitive to even the slightest criticism.

Even a suggestion that their behavior or words may be offensive or unacceptable to other people is provocative to covert narcissists for two reasons: number one, they lack insight to realize that they might be wrong, and number two, criticism, even well-intentioned, triggers their hypersensitivity because it erodes their view of themselves as chronically “victimized,” “wronged,” and “misunderstood.”

Number 5: They are prone to abrupt mood shifts.

Narcissists, in general, go through something called internal narcissistic cycles, which are rapid swings from euphoric and enthusiastic to dysphoric, disillusioned, and bored emotional states. It should be noted that these confusing yet predictable cycles are caused by external stimuli in narcissistic people, unlike in individuals with bipolar disorder, where their cause can be traced to the neurochemical imbalances in their brain.

When it comes to covert narcissists, these mood shifts are even more pronounced and jarring. This fact can be explained by two processes: elation and depletion. Since the goal of a covert narcissist is the same as overt narcissists power and control covert narcissists are often in a state of depletion, lack of satisfaction, and joy since they’re usually unable to achieve that goal.

If they perceive that they could achieve it, they experience elation, a temporary increase in their self-esteem and confidence, which is not sustainable in the long run because they may lack capacities that would grant them the power and admiration they desperately crave. This leaves them in the state of depletion once again.

Number 6: They always portray themselves as victims in interpersonal conflicts.

Since they are high-conflict individuals by default, they semi-consciously create chaotic situations and interpersonal struggles in their relationships with people. This provides them with opportunities to cast themselves as eternal victims. Their dysfunctional “victimhood” scripts are likely the result of their early childhood experiences. The victim mentality helps them to maintain their already distorted view of themselves as the ever-wronged individuals, even persecuted by the world and other people. This, in turn, helps them feel special, which satisfies their ego-related needs.
