Number 9: They are prone to passive aggression and the so-called silent treatment.
Most people use passive-aggressive tactics from time to time, but covert narcissists engage in passive aggression very often to convey frustration or position themselves as superior. Passive aggression as a tactic is used by covert narcissists for two reasons: number one, they are convinced that their specialness entitles them to get whatever they think they deserve, and number two, to exact revenge upon people whom they perceive to have “wronged” them or who are more successful.
One of the more common variants of passive aggression employed by covert narcissists is the so-called silent treatment. Silent treatment refers to a situation where a covert narcissist will discontinue their communication with another person as a form of emotional manipulation and control. The purpose of the silent treatment is to manipulate the non-narcissistic person to accept the covert narcissist’s point of view without any reasonable explanation.
This power play is employed by the covert narcissist as a strategy to get the other person to comply with the narcissist’s demands without explicitly trying to persuade them to do so. In this case, the silent treatment can be considered a form of emotional abuse.
