Number 2: Narcissists keep the critic in contempt
Contempt for criticism: narcissists keep the critic in contempt, i.e., they belittle the critic. In this way, the narcissist discredits the criticism and renders the other person less believable. It’s as if they’re saying, “Who cares what you think? You’re not even worth hearing anyway.” By demeaning the critic, the narcissist is boosting their ego and doesn’t have to face the possibility that they may have to change or do better. It’s like wearing armor to deflect anything that would damage their bloated self-concept.
Number 3: Overt or passive-aggressive rage
Overt or passive-aggressive rage is how narcissists express it. If the narcissist speaks ill of them, they hit back negatively and expose overt or passive-aggressive anger. They will not stand for someone differing or not willing to join their so-called grandness. This anger, which they consequently exhibit, is a pretty fouled-up facet known as narcissistic rage. The moment they are criticized, disagreed with, or slandered, their whole world falls apart. Their ego-inflated image of themselves bursts. Instead of reflecting on themselves, narcissists direct their anger towards you.
Number 4: Vindictive Reactivity
When criticized, narcissists respond with vindictive reactivity. Instead of accepting criticism like a grown-up, they become insult machines. They go out of their way to repay the individual who dared to criticize them. Therefore, when the narcissist is criticized for their flaws, they immediately respond with insults and hurtful words. Narcissists attempt to hurt the critic as much as they are hurt by the criticism. Rather than reflecting on the criticism inwardly, they become insulting.
